Program Overview
A veterinary assistant cares for the well-being of animals in animal hospitals, shelters, clinics, and zoos. They feed, bathe, exercise, and monitor these animals, as well as disinfect cages, kennels, or examination and operating rooms. Vet assistants also assist with surgical preparation, monitor the animals after surgery, and assist veterinarians in a variety of other duties.

Veterinary Assistant Programs
Vancouver Career College offers a Veterinary Health Care Assistant diploma program that can be completed in 40 weeks. Take vet assistant courses in pet nutrition and dietary requirements, animal handling and restraint, diagnostic imaging, preventative medicine, and more.
Before you graduate, you will complete a six-week practicum in a real-world veterinary setting and gain a multitude of skills in animal care and office administration.
Additional Certifications
Upon completion of the program, you will be able to work effectively animal health technologists and veterinary doctors. You will also complete and gain certifications in WHMIS 2015, Standard First Aid with CPR, and, DOGSAFE® Canine First Aid.
Admission Requirements
Students must meet all of the pre-requisites listed below, meet
their financial obligations with the college, and acknowledge
their understanding of the college’s policies and procedures
provided in the student handbook, prior to starting classes.
High school graduation or equivalent *
* (From an English language teaching institution)
OR
Mature student status **
** (19 years of age upon starting classes, and Pass college’s admissions test.)
This program is approved by the Registrar of the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of British Columbia.
The Veterinary Health Care Assistant program is available at the Coquitlam campus and is delivered online through distance learning.
